Years ago, my cousin we raised passed on, then a daughter ten days later, and a few months later, my husband died. I wallowed in misery for years I don’t remember. Finally, I snapped out of my self-pity through writing. Taking action in something creative helps you focus on something productive, meaningful, and, hopefully, fun. It’s hard to stay depressed while you’re creating.

I had researched happiness for my daughter since the 80s. I wanted her always to be happy. I chose to research happiness again in 2008.

Today, Friday, April 10, 15 years to the day she died, I read a happiness article on The Atlantic.

How to Build a Life
The Three Equations for a Happy Life, Even During a Pandemic
How to Build a Life is a new column that aims to give you the tools you need to construct a life that feels whole and meaningful.”

The happiness habits haven’t changed much over these 40 years since my baby was born perfect and 33 days later became sick with meningitis. These are my thought today to help you through these difficult days.

Basic Actions for Happiness

1. Feel Love

Concentrate on the unconditional Love you feel. Feel the Love of your Divine Creator, lover, yourself, family, friends, pets, your environment, work, or hobby. Stop and reject all thoughts of hatred, fear, anger. Replace these harmful emotions with loving thoughts. You’ll feel happier, dwelling on Love, not hate. Live in Love and feel joy. Joy is Love in action.

2. Get Creative

Write, paint, design, build. Design your life! Write out your new ambitions and a better bucket list. Forget status, showing off a luxury lifestyle. Create stability and simplicity for happiness.

3. Feel Gratitude

Be thankful for what you have. Don’t dwell on what you want. Things don’t make you happy. Contentment with what you already have makes you happy. A zen lifestyle with simplicity, a minimalist environment fosters satisfaction.
