Does your home support your emotions?

How important is your home life?

A happy home environment enriches family relationships. Over 50 percent of American marriages end in divorce. Unhappy teenagers make serious mistakes in judgment that they pay for the rest of their lives.

Turn your home into a sanctuary that supports your emotional well-being. Homes created as a center for family affection, shared activities, and joyful living provide a firm foundation for happiness and success. After teaching Design Psychology and researching the power of your home environment, I could teach you all I know, but that takes years of classes. Imagine one semester-long class each for lighting psychology, color psychology, patterns, textures, furnishings, and landscaping.

HERE ARE SOME QUICK TIPS  to make an immediate change in your environment.

1. Clean up the clutter. Be merciless. Every single accessory stops the eye and takes up visual space.

2. Clear off the surfaces. With nothing on tables, countertops, furniture tops, your home looks larger, cleaner, and lets you know when something needs to be cleaned up.  In my living room below, notice no accessories on the surfaces except on lamp. My kids play games on the partner’s desk and I work there with a laptop occasionally.

3. Paint the rooms the same light color. My favorite background is Sherwin Williams Tint of Honey.  Paint the walls, ceilings, and trim all the same color. It’s much easier to paint without cutting in. Plus, this practice makes spaces look larger. And, a home painted in one color flows without jarring your senses. In the flip home below, I didn’t paint the wooden rails or kitchen cabinets. If I planned to live there, I would have.

I even painted the flip the same color outside. The dwelling looked twice as big without all the trim painted dark brown.
